Codi Layne (1997-2008)

We sadly said good-bye to our oldest "child" today.

Codi Layne, along with several brothers and sisters, was born October 20, 1997 to parents, Barney Benvolio Wilmoth and I Love Lucy XIV. She was adopted into our home in November 1997. She was a very active and loving dog.

Codi knew a few tricks. She could jump up and prop her feet on the gate outside our bedroom and wave when she wanted someone to pet her. That is, until she gained so much weight that she couldn't jump up that far.

She enjoyed lying in front of a fire in the fireplace.

She also enjoyed playing in the back yard - alone at first, then with her little "sister" Taco after Taco was adopted in August 1999. They loved to chase rabbits in the backyard. Codi was even successful in catching a few, along with several moles that she cornered and dug up. She (mistakenly) thought she could bring them in the house. In order to get her to come inside after a "capture," we would have to throw the mole/rabbit/whatever over the back fence, out of her reach.

Codi hadn't been herself lately. She stopped eating and started losing weight. She no longer barked at noises outside the house. She didn't go to the door when Reagan came home. She barely moved much at all. A few days ago we noticed a spot on her lower stomach. After taking her to the vet, we found that she had a number of tumors internally. Our vet said it is common in her breed of dog to develop cancer at this age. He said that she probably wouldn't make it more than a week. We brought her home to spend her last few days with us.

She will be buried in the country, where we had hoped one day she could run and play. We know she would have loved it there.

I am sorry for your loss. We have a poodle who turned 10 years old last week. I know her years are numbered too.
